Chris and I landed in Australia in 2002. I had ditched my career in telecoms in favour of living in WA rather than Melbourne where all the telecoms action is. (On reflection, what a great decision that was!) I was ready to take whatever job was thrown at me but it was Chris who got the 'interesting' job! We were keen to work locally to Mandurah and he was given a great opportunity working at Forrest Medical Centre to look after their IT systems.
Back in 2002, we had dialup internet not exactly suited to remote support so the only option was to be on site to fix any issues. I have not so fond memories of Chris rolling in at 6am having spent all night rebuilding MedTech.
The good news is that over time things got fixed until the point at which the doctors couldn't remember the last time they had any significant computer issues. It was at this point when we realised that there were probably a lot more practices in similar positions and the information that Chris had gleaned from his experiences were likely to be of value to them.
We fast-forward through the teething issues and fine tuning associated with starting up such a revolutionary business idea (including working from home, not being able to take a holiday and all the rest) and arrive at 2005 when Heron Consulting Pty Ltd was formed
Initially we were a 2 man team set up with the intention of providing IT consultancy and strategic advice to practices - go in, identify issues, tell people how they can fix it. This was all well and good except for the 'getting it fixed' part. We struggled to find 3rd party suppliers who would deliver the changes we had recommended to the standards that we were striving for.
So, as Heron Consulting grew, we incorporated the supply and support of the systems that we recommended so that today we are preferred suppliers for companies such as Dell and Kyocera.
We currently have 5 staff and support medical centres all over Western Australia. (Thankfully we have more than dialup internet to do so...)
